Middle Atlantic Symposium

Roger Rearick Forum

Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 6PM

In preparations for the Middle Atlantic Symposium in the History of Art and for the Philadelphia Symposium on the History of Art, auditions for both events will be held at the Department's Roger Rearick Forum on THURSDAY, November 12, at 6:00 p.m., in room 2309. Refreshments will be served beginning at 5:30 p.m (on the fourth floor). All graduate students in our program are eligible to try out at the forum. From those auditioning, the faculty will choose one presenter to represent the department at each of the symposia. Please note that the two students ultimately selected are usually relatively advanced (typically having begun dissertation research and having presented papers at conferences or in seminars). Papers presented or published elsewhere are ineligible. However, you may submit a revised and improved version of a paper presented at a past Roger Rearick Forum (provided it has not been presented in other public symposia or conferences).

The paper lengths should be 15-20 minutes (with the idea that if one is selected to speak at MAS, the paper will need to be shortened to 15 minutes and lengthened to 20 minutes for the Philadelphia Symposium).

Students interested in auditioning should consult their advisors as soon as possible. Those auditioning will need to supply Yui Suzuki ( ysuzuki@umd.edu ) and Deborah Down (ddown@umd.edu ) with an abstract (of one or two paragraphs) no later than Monday, November 9.

The Middle Atlantic Symposium is hosted by the Department together with the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art. Graduate students from eight universities are chosen by their departments to present scholarly papers at the gathering. This year's speakers will hail from Duke University , Emory University , Penn State University , the University of Delaware , the University of Pennsylvania , the University of Pittsburgh , the Virginia Commonwealth University , and the University of Maryland . The event will be held on March 26th and 27th, both here and at the National Gallery. The Fortieth George Levitine Lecture in Art History, the symposium's keynote, will be delivered by Professor Nicholas Mirzoeff from NYU Steinhardt.

The Philadelphia Symposium will also be held in the spring (date TBA), with graduate-student representatives from approximately ten area programs.

Further details are forthcoming.
